Kate Garraway’s husband rushed to hospital following MBE ceremony

Kate Garraway has shared the news that her husband, Derek Draper, had to be urgently admitted to the hospital, following her “extraordinary” acknowledgement at Windsor Castle the previous week, where she was presented with an MBE.

The anchor of Good Morning Britain, aged 56, was officially awarded the honor by the Prince of Wales, aged 41, at a ceremony on Wednesday (28 June), acknowledging her contributions to broadcasting, journalism, and philanthropy. Her proud spouse Derek, 55, was there to support his wife in a rare public appearance, and the occasion visibly touched him.

Derek’s life took a dramatic turn when he contracted Covid-19 in 2020. He battled the virus for 13 months in the hospital and now requires 24/7 care. Kate has consistently updated the public about his health status, offering another update on Sunday (2 July).

The renowned presenter posted a few photos from the castle and wrote: “What a week it has been, that began with Derek in hospital and concluded with Derek back in the hospital, but with this extraordinary day wedged in the middle. The whole experience has left me incredibly touched and humbled.

“Thank you all for the beautiful messages, including the lady who halted her car a few minutes ago outside our house to say “I understand what you’re experiencing, and I know how significant that moment was and I am a nurse.” It was so heartwarming to see Derek’s resolve to be there, so generous of the Prince of Wales to make it special for him & to recognize the efforts of Jake, our amazing caregiver, who embodies all those who make Derek’s day-to-day life feasible, and of course my ever-supportive, Mum and Dad!”

Kate also mentioned it was “so humbling to meet all the other” honorees, whom she characterized as “much more deserving than myself”. She further commented: “The Prince of Wales succeeded in making every single one of them feel as special as they truly are.”

In an additional update about her husband, the celebrity added: “Tomorrow, Derek is back in hospital and naturally, the daily struggles persist – but the fact that he could be a part of Wednesday is something to cherish & can’t express enough gratitude to everyone in the @NHS and all those who care for him for making it happen. I owe so many thanks, but I must express my gratitude to @lisaredmanltd for lending me my “fit for a king dress” & @missbsmillinery for the coordinating hat!! Wishing everyone love and a happy Sunday.”

The seasoned GMB presenter’s post was met with an outpouring of support from fellow TV celebrities and fans. Myleene Klass responded: “Love you x”, while Dr. Amir Khan commented: “Fantastic news, so incredibly well deserved”. Presenter Anna Williamson declared: “No one…NO ONE deserves this more, Kate.”
