Kate Garraway’s Husband Derek Draper Cause Of Death Following COVID-19 Battle

Kate Garraway stood steadfastly by her husband Derek Draper’s side during his prolonged battle with COVID-19, which began in March 2020 and sadly ended with his passing on January 5. For four years, Derek, a psychologist and author, faced numerous health challenges, requiring frequent hospitalizations and intensive care at home.

Derek’s death, while the exact cause is yet to be confirmed, followed a critical condition triggered by a cardiac arrest in early December. Kate, a host on “Good Morning Britain” (GMB), shared this heart-wrenching news on her Instagram, expressing her sorrow and gratitude to the medical teams who tirelessly worked to help Derek.

She wrote: “It’s with heavy heart that I must inform you of my beloved husband Derek’s passing. Since his cardiac arrest in early December, worsened by COVID-19 complications from 2020, his condition remained critical. In his final days, I was by his side, holding his hand through those long, last hours. While I will share more in time, I want to thank the medical teams for their dedicated efforts and for ensuring Derek’s comfort and dignity in his last moments. Our family is deeply appreciative of the immense support received. Derek, my love, rest peacefully now. You were a treasured part of my life.”

Derek, father to two children with Kate, endured the longest COVID-19 hospitalization in Britain, spending 13 months in care. Although he returned home in April 2021, his recovery was incomplete, and he continued to need support.

In December 2023, Kate revealed Derek’s readmission to the hospital, highlighting his uncertain and heartbreaking daily battles. During this period, Kate cancelled all her professional commitments to stay by his side, hoping for a miracle.

Derek initially sought help from Dr. Hilary Jones, a colleague at “Good Morning Britain,” when he first showed symptoms. Following his advice, Derek was hospitalized and later placed in a medically induced coma to aid his fight against the virus. Despite waking from the coma, Derek faced a long recovery, marked by significant weight loss and physical challenges.

Kate joyfully announced Derek’s return home in April 2021, though he still required constant care. Sadly, Derek’s health seesawed, leading to additional hospital stays.

In a recent statement on “Good Morning Britain,” read by host Susanna Reid, Kate expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support and shared her family’s intention to heal, acknowledging that Derek is now free from pain. She thanked the “Good Morning Britain” community for their continuous support and asked for understanding as she takes time to be with her family, assuring viewers of her return to the show to celebrate life once more.
