Dr. Michael Mosley gives stark warning about Heinz Tomato Soup

TV health expert Dr Michael Mosley has raised concerns about the health implications of consuming Heinz Tomato Soup due to its high salt content. In a segment on Channel 4’s Secrets Of Your Big Shop, Dr Mosley revealed that the popular lunch choice for Brits could potentially contribute to various health problems and may even be worse than a small portion of McDonald’s fries. He explained that exceeding the recommended daily intake of 6g of salt can lead to salt dependency, which in turn can result in serious health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. A single tin of Heinz Tomato Soup contains 2.2g of salt.

Dr Mosley emphasized that processed foods, including grab-and-go options, are major sources of salt in the diet. He highlighted that 70% of Brits purchase lunch at work but often struggle to make healthy choices when it comes to food. Dr Mosley suggested that people look for alternatives to high-salt options, especially during lunchtime when cravings may arise. He warned that while tomato soup may sound healthy, the salt content should be taken into consideration. A single tin of Heinz Tomato Soup contains five times more salt than a small portion of McDonald’s fries.

However, Dr Mosley offered some positive news by explaining that salt dependency can be broken. He advised using low-sodium salt that contains potassium instead of sodium, as well as incorporating more dried herbs and spices to enhance flavor in meals.

Addressing the concerns raised, a spokesperson for Kraft Heinz UK emphasized their commitment to consumer health and wellbeing. The spokesperson mentioned that the company has set goals to reduce salt and sugar levels in its product range. They also noted various options available to consumers, such as Heinz No Added Sugar and Salt Tomato Ketchup, Heinz No Added Sugar Cream of Tomato Soup with reduced salt content, and the introduction of Heinz Vegan Classics range.
