Coronation Street star joins rival soap a year after her shock exit

Just a year after her surprise departure from Coronation Street, Melanie Hill is all set to light up our screens once more, this time on BBC’s Casualty. The talented actress played the beloved Cathy Matthews on ITV’s flagship soap since 2015, capturing the audience’s hearts with her poignant storylines, especially her deep bond with café owner Roy Cropper.

After the death of Cathy’s husband, Roy played a pivotal role in supporting her as she grappled with hoarding issues, a mechanism she developed to navigate her profound grief. However, in 2022, Melanie took the tough decision to leave the show, prioritising care for her 88-year-old mother.

Now, she’s thrilled to embark on a fresh acting journey as Clinical Nurse Manager Siobhan Mackenzie in Casualty. This dynamic character, known for her straightforward attitude, is set to create quite the stir amongst her new colleagues. Sharing her exhilaration on social media platform X, Melanie expressed: “Couldn’t be more happy. I’m super excited for the year ahead working with such brilliant folks @BBCCasualty @BBC.” Her legion of fans swiftly showered her with love and best wishes, with comments like: “Congratulations, Melanie!”, “So pleased about this! Have a brilliant time there x”, and “Wonderful news Mel.”

Casualty’s official account on X also extended a warm welcome, posting: “Welcome to #Casualty, Melanie Hill!”

Reflecting on her Coronation Street departure, Melanie had previously mentioned: “It’s not been an easy thing to decide. My family has been important but the pandemic has made a lot of people think about the future. It has changed a lot of things in my head. You’ve just got to see what’s important to you.” With aspirations to visit family in Australia, Melanie certainly has a vibrant journey ahead.

The good news for Coronation Street enthusiasts is that Cathy’s story isn’t definitively closed. Instead of a final farewell, Cathy embarked on a new adventure with boyfriend Brian Packham, keeping the possibilities for her return wide open.

Expressing her enthusiasm for her Casualty role, Melanie remarked, “She’s a supremely competent manager, who is firm but fair and expects nothing but the best from her nursing team.” She also gave a playful warning that Siobhan is not one to be crossed, hinting at dramatic episodes to come.
