Dido was an extremely popular singer who sold a staggering 21 million copies of her debut No Angel following its release in 1999. If you don’t remember any of her songs, I can only imagine you were living under a rock, she was everywhere!
Eminem even sampled her ballad “Thank You” on his hit “Stan”, which definitely will have helped her sales, the singer and songwriter did manage to make a name for herself in her own right. The song also won her “Best Song” alongside Eminem.
Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O’Malley Armstrong (isn’t quite a catchy as Dido, is it!) also had a huge hit with her 2003 song “White Flag” which definitely helped her avoid the second album curse that many artists suffer with. “Life of Rent” sold 13 million copies and won her “Best Album” award at the MTV Music Awards.
Soon after that, she was co-writing Britney Spears’ song “I’m not a girl, not yet a woman” – What a classic!
Most Bridget Jones fans will remember her duet with Rufus Wainwright entitled “I Eat Dinner” for the Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason film soundtrack.
Her third album was even a big success and was received better by critics and reached number two in the UK, but it only managed to sell just over a million copies worldwide.
“Her songs are so melodic and atmospheric they easily work their way into the subconscious” spoke one critic.
This decline between albums led Dido to slip away from the spotlight slightly, but what’s she been up to?
She joined up with Annie Lennox and 21 other female artists in 2007 to raise awareness of the issue of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Africa. The single was released on World Aids Day on December 1st, 2007.
Her five-year break saw a few soundtrack submissions, including the Oscar-nominated “If I Rise” before 2013’s “Girl Who Got Away” which got her back into the UK Top 5 and sold a further 800,000 records.
Dido married Rohan Gavin in 2010 and had one son, who was born in July 2011. She spent a lot of time away from the spotlight, to focus on her home life and to look after her son Stanley, which meant her singer-songwriter profile had dwindled a little and her Greatest Hits album which was released in 2013, only reached number 27 peak.
When the album was released, it marked the end of her contract with Sony Music which meant she was an independent singer again.
“I’m like an overexcited kid,” she told HitFix. “I have so many ideas. ‘I can do this, I can do that.’ I’m like ‘take a breath’.”
“I’m in the middle of writing an album of original material and it took me a while to get back into it after Stanley was born just because I was so focused on him and my husband,” she said back at the end of 2013.
Nobody knows when her album will be released, it could be very soon, it could take a few more years, who knows.
“Life For Rent is the only record I intentionally made as the label wanted another album and I was on a wave of excitement,” she said.
“Before and after that, songwriting has been my way of communicating – I never sit down and think I must make a record. I just write songs until I think there’s a body of work there.”
She had a brief stint as a mentor on The Voice UK back in 2013, which she admitted “Music, for me, isn’t a competition so I find the whole concept of judging really funny,”
“I really enjoyed mentoring on The Voice – the contestants were amazing and it’s quite a challenge. I was like, ‘God, I wouldn’t do this!’ I don’t think I would have had the confidence to perform on live TV in front of so many people – and I’m in total awe of some of the amazing artists I’ve met who are so young but totally poised.”
She still seems to be a very popular artist among other singers, no matter how quiet she goes on us. Miley Cyrus covered “No Freedom” for her happy Hippy campaign and Dido’s “Thank you” was sampled by Rhianna on her last album.
