Remember Kim Wilde? she was a huge artist back in the day. She released the song ‘Kids In America’ as her debut single which peaked at number 2 on the UK singles charts in 1981.
This song brought her into the limelight and following her successful debut she produced her own version of ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’. This managed to top the charts in both Australia and Canada. Amazingly, she didn’t even know the song before she started to record it.
“Basically we just went into the studio with a lot of energy and not a lot of reverence. We changed quite a lot of the song and I think that’s why it was so successful. It was a very spontaneous idea.”
She also teamed up with Mel Smith to release the song ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ which has remained a Christmas classic ever since.
Not only this but her incredible talent has been widely recognised and she has won awards in the UK, Sweden and in Germany. From ‘Best British Female Solo Artist’ to ‘Best Female Singer’.
But, what has she been up to more recently?
She is currently 56 years old and has spent the past decades touring around the UK. Although she has been part of an 80s revival series, she has described her fame to have caused her a bit of a breakdown.
“I’d wake up not be able to see any light at the end of it. I just remember being without motivation.
“I gave myself a hard time because I had everything I thought I wanted – to make music, be a pop star, travel the world – but I had this gaping hole in my soul. I felt ungrateful because I had so much and it wasn’t enough.”
She has since decided that a life in the limelight isn’t something she wants. Instead, she has had a complete career change and is pursuing a career as a landscape gardener.
She has written two books about gardening and filmed two series of ‘Garden Invaders’. She is a lot happier now and has two children with her long-time husband Hal Fowler who she married in 1996!
